The word ‘engineer’ is derived from the Latin words ‘engineiare’ (meaning ‘to make or produce’) and ‘Ingenium’ (meaning ‘clever’). An engineer usually requires a basic four-year bachelor’s degree in any of several engineering disciplines. Engineer’s Day is celebrated every year to mark and appreciate the contribution of engineers to the development of the country and the whole world. Evolution started with engineers but on the contrary, we have forgotten the person by whose grace the human race was created and the whole universe came into existence.
This year marks the 161st anniversary of the birth of M Visvesvaraya. He was born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli village, Karnataka. Visvesvaraya, a teacher, economist, scholar of the twentieth century, and prolific civil engineer, made significant contributions to the field of engineering. The day is celebrated to celebrate the great work of engineers and encourage them to improve and innovate. Engineer’s Day is celebrated to pay tribute to Bharat Ratna Visvesvaraya, who was considered the ‘Father of Modern Mysore’. His thoughts, approach, and way of thinking are admired by many even today. The nation celebrates the day in his honor by remembering the mastermind with his many works.
Visvesvaraya began his career as an Assistant Engineer in the Public Works Department of the Government of Bombay and contributed significantly to several technical projects in Mysore, Hyderabad, Odisha, and Maharashtra.
Visvesvaraya designed and employed automatic barrier water floodgates in 1903. These well-designed floodgates were also called block systems. It has automatic doors that can automatically close when water overflows. Also, it was first planted in the Khadakwasla reservoir in Pune.
When Hyderabad was badly affected during the floods in 1908, the then Nizam requested Visvesvaraya to help him prepare a drainage system to save the city from flooding again. Then he came up with the construction of storage reservoirs for the city. Visvesvaraya also built a sewage farm outside Hyderabad to prevent pollution of the Musi river, which was well designed and appreciated by all.
Significance

As Chief Engineer, Visvesvaraya built the famous Krishna Raja Sagar Dam in Mysore.
Visvesvaraya made major reforms in the fields of education, banking, agriculture, commerce, industrialization, and irrigation. He was a well-known pioneer of India’s economic planning
Visvesvaraya is known for his flood disaster management skills and excellent irrigation techniques. In 1903, he designed and patented automatic barrier water floodgates.
