Can one imagine a Holi celebration without spreading the joy over some homemade ghee- fried gujiyas? I think not!
Do you remember those days when waking up on the Holi morning to the smell of best Holi sweet recipes was like a dream-come-true moment? Do you recall how grandma’s and our mother’s used to get secretive about Holi gujiya recipe? By far, it has to be everyone’s one of the most precious childhood memories. Since that day till today, we miss those Holi ki gujiya, for sure. But no more FOMO, as the best gujiya recipe has been unveiled.
So, here’s presenting a gujiya recipe with mawa that is sure to be a major hit across your Holi house party or just to satiate your Holi gujiya cravings. With changing times, the recipe for gujiya has gone through its own period of changes and has resulted in giving rise to quite a few interesting recipes. While through this blog the traditional khoya gujiyas recipe has been conveyed to all, but over the internet, one might find some chocolate gujiya, bhaang gujiya, jam gujiya, halwa gujiya and rabri gujiya. Mostly, across all its varieties, the fillings differ. Also, as people are health-conscious, these days the act of frying has been shifted to baking. Without any further ado, let’s start discussing the recipe for gujiya, the traditional way.
Ingredients –
For gujiya dumpling
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour or 2 cups of whole wheat flour
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ⅓ to ½ cup water or as required
- 2 tablespoon ghee
For gujiya filling
- 1 cup khoya
- ½ tablespoon ghee
- ⅓ cup chopped dry fruits
- ⅓ cup powdered sugar
- ½ teaspoon cardamom powder
Instructions
- Start by making the soft dough of all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour and salt in a bowl.
- To do so, heat the pan and add ghee. Pour the melted ghee over the flour mixture.
- Add water and begin to knead the dough. After doing so, cover the dough with a moist cloth and keep aside for half an hour.
- For the filling, take another bowl and crumble khoya, chop dry fruits and keep it aside.
- Take a pan and melt ghee on low flame, then add crumbled khoya. Cook it till the khoya starts to gather around. Let the khoya cool.
- Further, add powdered sugar, chop dry fruits and cardamom powder.
- Mix well and then the stuffing aside. Check the sweetness, if needed add more sugar to suit your preference.
- Take the soft dough of flour and roll each into a small ball of having 4 to 5 inches diameter.
- You can spill some flour on the rolling surface so that the dough doesn’t stick the surface while rolling. But make sure, you don’t end up adding too much flour.
- Then add water on the edge of the circumference of each circle of the dough.
- Place some amount of khoya stuffing on one side of the circle and make sure to keep the edges empty. Don’t add too much of stuffing, as the gujiya might end up breaking while frying.
- Carefully bring the edges together and gently press the edges to seal the opening. Trim the extra edges with the help of gujiya cutter or pizza cutter or you can even make a pleated design at the edges.
- Heat ghee in a pan and deep fry each of the dumplings till golden brown.
